Salvage Vanguard Theater presents Adrienne Dawes' new play – an immersive performance that features puppets by Julia Smith and original music by Graham Reynolds – as inspired by Mexican casta paintings that depict the mixing of races in colonial Latin America. Look: A wealthy patron commissions an apprentice to paint a casta series, but the portraits come to life and revolt. Performances (an excellent cast, directed by JKJK) will take place in the Rapaport Atrium of the Blanton Museum's glorious venue.Oct. 27, 29-30. All shows: 2pm. $5-12 (free on Thursdays). -

The Contemporary Austin: The Very 'Rary

Lydia Street Gallery: SUM of the Parts
Valerie Fowler, that acclaimed painter of natural phantasmagoria, returns with a new show. Says the artist: "I began this body of work feeling scattered, a little spent and rudderless, then walloped by unrelenting heat, the worst in my memory, and I’m a lifelong Texan… Beyond the walls of my studio, fires and floods were happening seemingly everywhere, and the Arctic ice cap was melting four times faster than scientists had previously understood. I felt exhausted from the challenge to maintain hope. I decided to just keep at the work, following curiosity, making pieces that reflected my scattered consciousness." Suggestion: Give your eyes a glimpse of the wild sublime and soak in the glory of what Fowler's brushes and pigments so vividly capture.Through Oct. 30. Free. -

This new production from the adventurous stage professionals of Glass Half Full Theatre reveals the story of a girl on the precipice of adulthood, contending with the physical and metaphysical violence of borders. Blending sophisticated puppetry with live actors, Yamel Cucuy "draws upon frightening folk tales and modern horror movies to create a terrifying psychological landscape of pitfalls both legal and spiritual."
