Tempest done tossed our teacups, hey? Still so hella much to repair and recuperate from – but hold up just a little minute now, hoss:
1) You deserve a few laughs right about now, we reckon. And while Austin’s Sure Thing is over and done with, there’s the rest of that veritable juggernaut of merriment, the Out Of Bounds Comedy Festival, working overtime to stretch a smile across your storm-stressed face. You won’t find a greater concentration of improv, sketch, and stand-up talent from all over the country in this city than during this OOB weekend – and, remember? One of the main constituents of the glorious thing, ColdTowne Theater? They moved here to get away from that goddamn Katrina, back in the day.
2) On the other hand, citizen, maybe a spectacle of human kinesis and the cultural sublime is a more preferred anodyne for your weather woes? Then experiencing Suhaila Dance Company’s Enta Omri, in which the poetry of the Arabic world is used to explore themes of loss and love, is just what you’re looking for. And you’ll find that this Sunday afternoon at Ballet Austin.
3) Okay, visual-arts lovers, let’s try this again. Because so many of the gallery receptions we noted in our last go-round were postponed to this weekend, we recommend a night or two of checking out the latest exhibitions opening around town – to say nothing (although we’re about to) of the social and aesthetic celebrations of Gender Unbound and Art of the Brew on Saturday.
4) And, speaking of visuals, that sweet venue known as Guzu Gallery, right next-door to Austin Books & Comics on North Lamar? The place that’s chockablock with Dunnys and Munnys and cig-smoking Kozik bunnies among all the volumes of vivid art decking their walls? As part of ABC’s 40th anniversary agenda, Guzu opens its new “Spirit of ’77” show with a party on Friday night, featuring the usual talented suspects translating choice fragments of that long-gone year into an array of new graphic astonishments.
5) Okay, break’s over, let’s get back to helping our neighbors in need – and here’s a bunch of ways to do that, to pitch in with what you can, to show that stupid bag of wind (note: we mean Harvey, not the orange shitgibbon) that it’s not gonna get the best of us Texans.
