When legendary poster artist Frank Kozik died earlier this month at the age of 61, he did not simply leave behind an incredible body of work created during his years as the go-to poster artist for Austin’s underground bands in the 80s and 90s.
He also left a global impact on the art print and collectibles scene, a legacy that is seen in the ubiquity of high-end vinyl figures and silkscreen printed poster art for bands, games, and movies.
To celebrate both aspects of his career, the Austin Museum of Popular Culture is hosting a celebration of his work and of the man at Mohawk at 8pm on May 31. The evening will feature both a special display of some of Kozik’s most famous and rarely seen works from the AusPop archive, but also a special panel discussion featuring his peers and friends.
Moderated by Chronicle Culture Editor Richard Whittaker, the panel will include:
• UT Assistant Professor of Practice and former Chronicle music editor Raoul Hernandez
• poster artist Danny Garrett, a veteran of Antone’s and the Armadillo World Headquarters
• artist and Mondo co-founder Rob Jones, who became famous creating gig posters for bands like the White Stripes
• and Geoff Peveto, who co-founded the American Poster Institute and organize the inaugural Flatstock Poster Conference.
