    Amplify Austin Day

Looking to do some good for others, citizen? Wish you had more to give than you do? This is the day in which AmplifyATX.org, the online platform that makes it easy to donate to local nonprofits, supercharges their philanthropic site with special matches that will amplify the value of your gift. Amplify Austin Day is the biggest day of giving in Central Texas, raising $102.7 million for the local community since 2013, and this year you can be part of the seven-county crowd spreading funds (and, consequently, joy) across our river city. – Wayne Alan Brenner

    BIPOC Pop 2024

After two years creating a space for “making and strengthening community and creative critical action today and tomorrow in the comics, gaming, animation, and multimedia storytelling arts,” Austin’s very own symposium for comic fans of color returns for three days. Explore topics like reinterpreting historical media, current Black comics as interpreted by Black scholars, and “Why Are All the Cowboys White?” All this, and workshops, animation screenings, and plenty of networking opportunities to meet other folks in the graphic narrative field. – James Scott

    Fariha Róisín

Poet and activist Fariha Róisín was born in Ontario but raised in Sydney, and now resides in Los Angeles. Her work ties together themes of “margins, liminality, otherness, and the mercurial nature of being” as well as stocking conversation on contemporary Islam, queer identity, and wellness. The former Hairpin self-care columnist celebrates her second poetry release, Survival Takes a Wild Imagination, at Best of Austin-winning lit-lounge Reverie Books with a reading, audience Q&A, and booksigning. – James Scott

    Full Circle Sustainable Steak Dinner

You know the folks at Still Austin in the Yard have a way with grain that distills it into some of the finest potent potables available in these here parts, right? Tonight, their award-winning bourbons and ryes will be paired with cuts of Double J Ranch beef from cows that were raised on Central Texas grasses and spent grain from Still Austin. (That’s why it’s called Full Circle.) ’Course, if they’re staging a steak dinner as posh as this one, they’d best have a damned good chef lined up. Would you believe: MaieB’s own chef Michael Fojtasek? Because it’s true! – Wayne Alan Brenner

    Gary James McQueen

If you caught the 2018 doc McQueen, about the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen, then you’re already familiar with the talents of his nephew and protégé Gary James McQueen, who was responsible for the stunning, under-the-skin skull sculptures featured in the opening credits. Those skulls, as represented via 3D lenticular artworks, form the basis of the Gary James McQueen exhibit – his first stateside – now running at West Chelsea Contemporary through March 24. – Kimberley Jones

TXHC For Palestinian Liberation w/ Bosh, Tupaki, Banged Out, the Stuff, Unnecessary Roughness [inside]

Five Texas hardcore bands plot an all-ages show at Mohawk that raises money for the people of Gaza to purchase eSIM cards. Ski mask-donning Bosh both rage and diminish on latest EP AGAINST GOD, where walloping bass and squalling guitar meet slowed-down power chords. Fellow locals Banged Out pull a melodic bait-and-switch on 2023’s Promo, concealing the violence of Leah Miller’s androgynous scream behind a squeaky guitar intro and a quiet, easy-listening interlude. The Stuff, Tupaki, and Unnecessary Roughness round out the bill, which requests a $10 donation. – Carys Anderson

Why Black Museums: Exhibitions and Relations

At a time when Texas universities are making less space, not more, for diverse representation, the Art Galleries at Black Studies’ symposium returns to honor the essential role Black and other ethnically specific museums play in our culture and communities. A morning roundtable with historians and curators Jacqueline Smith-Francis, Carre Adams, and Ulili Emore will explore their work preserving Black history in Central Texas, while the afternoon programming includes case study presentations. The whole day is free and open to the public, but you’ll need to register online to attend either in person or virtually.: – Kimberley Jones
