Rain, Wind, Wayne Newton
The election night crowd that gathered outside the Capitol grounds last Tuesday endured near-freezing temperatures, gusty winds, heavy downpours, and the singing of Wayne Newton. By 3am, some 15,000 Bush supporters had gone home, leaving several thousand waiting to hear from the candidate who never showed. Nor did any Bush family member — although nephew George P. had been on the stand leading cheers hours earlier. The governor dispatched his campaign finance chairman, Don Evans, to tell his diehard supporters that the election was on hold.
