The UT Longhorns broke a four-game winless streak with a 2-0 win over Kansas State last Friday. They’re at Iowa State this weekend in somewhat desperate need of a Big 12 win. The Horns are 7-6-1, but just 0-3-1 in the Big 12, and in danger of not finishing in the top eight in the nine-team Big 12. … West Virginia is the top-ranked women’s team in the nation; the Mountaineers will be in Austin for the home finale, Oct. 23. … The St. Edward’s men (11-1) and women (8-1-1) both continue to rise in the DII national rankings, with just three weekends left in the regular season.
The U.S. men beat Cuba and tied New Zealand, in their last tune-ups before the final round of WC qualifying starts Nov. 11 against archrival Mexico. … The European Champions League group stage continues Tue.-Wed., Oct. 18-19 (continuing through Dec. 6-7), with a number of televised games each day at 1:45pm. … The last week of the CONCACAF Champions League group stage is Oct. 18-20, with games in the evenings, and four of the eight spots in the knockout round still up for grabs. … The U.S. Women bowed out of the U-17 World Cup with a loss to defending champion Japan in the group stage finale.
