The UT Longhorns announced nine new recruits on Monday: seven freshmen and two transfers – the starting goalies from both the universities of Kentucky and Louisville. They’ll be trying to fill the hole left by four-year starter Abby Smith, who last month became the first soccer player ever drafted out of UT.
The U.S. Women’s Olympic qualifying tournament, being played this week in Dallas and Houston, will be televised after all. The U.S. is playing Costa Rica as we go to press Wednesday, then faces Mexico at 3pm, Sat., Feb. 13, and Puerto Rico at 7:30pm, Mon., Feb. 15. The semifinals and final are in Houston, at 7:30pm, Fri., Feb. 19, and 4pm, Sun., Feb. 21. The weekday games will air live on NBCSN; the Mexico game and the final will stream live on NBC Sports Live and air delayed on NBCSN.
The U.S. Men beat Canada 1-0 on Friday on a late Jozy Altidore goal; combined with the earlier 3-2 win over Iceland, that makes a nice start to the year. They’ll next get back together for back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala, March 25 & 29, while the U-23 squad faces a home-and-away playoff series with Colombia for a spot in the 2016 Olympics on those same dates, with Colombia hosting the first leg, and Frisco, Texas, hosting the second.
The top four teams in the English Premier League face off this Sunday, Feb. 14 in a doubleheader on NBCSN: Arsenal-Leicester is at 6am, followed by Manchester City-Tottenham at 10:15am.
The European Champions League knockout stages begin this week, Feb. 16-17, with Fox Sports showing two games simultaneously each day at 1:45pm on FS1 and FS2: Chelsea at Paris St. Germain and Zenit St. Petersburg at Benfica Lisbon on Tuesday, and Real Madrid at Roma and Wolfsburg at Gent on Wednesday.
