The Austin Aztex made some moves this week, announcing their first player signings on Monday (holdover local products Andres Cuero and Travis Golden, plus USL-PRO veteran midfielders Drew Yates and Lance Roze­boom), and promoting their 2015 Launch Party, being held next Tuesday, Nov. 25 at PGi Austin (612 W. Fourth, the former La Zona Rosa), starting at 6pm. The party will feature music, food and drink, and the new “Soccer Cage” that the team will be featuring for pre-game entertainment before next season’s games. The Aztex will also announce their MLS affiliate, season ticket info, and the 2015 jersey reveal, along with some other details on game-day improvements. (The beer garden is back!) The Texas Longhorns made the most of their final home appearance of the year Friday night, beating Rice, 3-0, in their first NCAA tournament game in three years. The Horns dominated play throughout, and got goals from senior Sharis Lachappelle, freshman Olivia Brook, and sophomore Julia Dyche. Next up: 12th-ranked Notre Dame, at 3pm this Friday in College Station, with the winner going against the Arizona-Texas A&M winner at 1:30pm Sunday, Nov. 23.

St. Edward’s men take on Colorado Mesa Thursday afternoon in Seattle in the NCAA DII round of 16. The Hilltoppers (16-2-1) lost to CMU up in Colorado in their first game of the season, back in September; since then, they’re unbeaten in their last 16 games. No live-streaming, but live stats are available through the St. Ed’s website. The winner faces the Seattle Pacific-Cal State LA winner on Saturday for a spot in the Final Four®Andrew Fox, who led the Heartland Conference in goals and assists, has been named conference player of the year.

The St. Ed’s women won their first-round NCAA game, beating Dallas Baptist for the third time this season, but then lost 1-0 to host and regional top seed Colorado School of Mines, to end their season at 15-5.

Major League Soccer conference finals start Sunday, with New York-New England at 12:30pm on NBC, and LA-Seattle at 4pm on ESPN. Return legs are the next weekend… The U.S. men lost a pair of games in the UK over the weekend – 2-1 to Colombia, and 4-1 to Ireland’s second string – ending 2014 with just one win in their last eight games.
