The Texas Longhorns seem to be firing on all cylinders halfway through their nonconference season: Senior striker Kylie Doniak scored three goals and an assist as the Horns trounced Georgia, 3-0, and Cal State Northridge, 5-1, last week and has been named Big 12 Conference Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. With a previous 3-0 win at Houston, Texas just had the best three-game run in the program’s history. This week the Horns host UTSA (Fri., Sept. 2, 7pm) and Dartmouth (Sun., Sept. 4, noon), Mike Myers Stadium, 707 Clyde Littlefield Dr. $4-7.
St. Edward’s women, coming off a 17-2-2 season last year, are ranked sixth in the nation in the Division 2 preseason poll. They open play this weekend, hosting Angelo State (Fri., Sept. 2, 4pm) and Washburn (Sun., Sept. 4, noon); the Hilltopper men start a day earlier, hosting McMurry (Thu., Sept. 1, 4pm) and Incarnate Word (Wed., Sept. 7, 4pm).
Orlando City (née Austin Aztex) hosts the Harrisburg City Islanders for the USL PRO championship Saturday (6pm, Fox Soccer) after trouncing the Richmond Kickers, 3-0, in last week’s division final. “I thought that tonight we played at a level above the league we currently play in,” said Orlando coach Adrian Heath… Orlando had four players selected to the all-league first team – including former Aztex players Maxwell Griffin, Yordany Alvarez, and Miguel Gallardo – while Jamie Watson made second team.
