The last game of the Women’s World Cup group stage produced the biggest upset, as the USA lost its first group-stage game ever – 2-1 to Sweden – to drop into a difficult quarterfinal matchup with Brazil and all-world Marta. Elsewhere, there were some disappointments (Canada, Birgit Prinz), but things went largely according to form, and the eight teams going into the knockout round are all ranked in the Top 11 in the world. The quarterfinals are this weekend, July 9-10, with the semifinals Wednesday, July 13; the third-place game Saturday, July 16, 10:30am; and the final Sunday, July 17, 1:45pm (all on ESPN; broadcast times shown on the bracket at right).
Argentina Futbol Club is an entertaining and insightful documentary about the clasico of clasicos, Buenos Aires’ Boca Juniors against River Plate. Great plays, screaming fans, Maradona, profane songs sung by thousands of people in unison – it’s all there. Tuesday, July 12, 7:15pm; Alamo Village, 2700 W. Anderson.
