Congratulations on another great season for the St. Edward’s women soccer team. It ended on Saturday, one game short of the NCAA Final Four, as UC-San Diego scored on the only shot on goal of the game by either team. The Hilltoppers (17-2-2) had gotten to the Elite Eight by upsetting unbeaten, untied Central Missouri 3-2 on Nov. 18.
The Colorado Rapids won the MLS Cup on Sunday, beating Dallas 2-1 in overtime, with the winning goal coming off the foot of Senegalese striker Mac Kandji, who played in Austin with the Atlanta Silverbacks.
A couple of surprises in European Champions League action Tuesday: Roma had a stunning three-goal, second-half comeback to beat Bayern Munich, 3-2, and close in on a spot in the final 16; Arsenal gave up two late goals in Portugal to put their celebration on hold. More games today (Wednesday), and the last group stage games are Dec. 7-8.
The U.S. women beat Italy 1-0 on Saturday in the first leg of a playoff for a spot in the 2011 World Cup; the return leg is this Saturday, Nov. 27, in Chicago. The crucial goal on the road for the U.S. came in the fourth minute of extra time from late sub Alex Morgan, the youngest player on the roster.
It only happens twice a year: Monday, Nov. 29, 2pm, is El Clásico, Barcelona hosting Real Madrid, live on ESPN Deportes, GolTV, and ESPN3.com.
And remember, a week from Saturday is the meeting that’s been called to discuss building another pro soccer team in Austin:
Dec. 4, 2-4pm at Mister Tramp’s Pub, 8565 Research.
