Gutted. Betrayed. In shock. That’s the collective reaction of the Austin Aztex faithful after owner Phil Rawlins announced Monday that he’s packing up the team and will move to Orlando, Fla., for the 2011 season. The move came as a complete surprise to all but the top ownership; coach Adrian Heath and many players will stay with the team, and some, but not all of the staff were also offered jobs in Orlando… The Aztex’s Eddie Johnson and Jamie Watson were named to the USSF D-2 all-star team last week. Great guys, great players – best of luck at your new teams.
The UT Longhorn women host their archrival, sixth-ranked Texas A&M, in the final home game of the season, Friday, Oct. 29, 7pm, at Mike Myers Stadium, Manor Rd. at Red River ($2 for UT staff/faculty). The Horns ended No. 8 Oklahoma State’s 13-game unbeaten streak last Friday with a 1-0 win on a Kylie Doniak goal. They lost Sunday to Oklahoma, 2-1 in double overtime, but at 11-4-3, they rose into the national rankings, including 29th in the NCAA’s initial RPI ratings.
The UT men beat archrival Texas A&M 3-1 last weekend to finish 11-0 for the season and advance to the intramural regionals in Lubbock this weekend; see www.utclubsoccer.com for info.
St. Edward’s women (14-0-1) are now ranked sixth in the nation in Division II; their final home game is Saturday, Oct. 30, 1pm, hosting UT-Permian Basin.
Major League Soccer playoffs start this weekend: Columbus vs. Colorado, Salt Lake vs. Dallas, New York vs. San Jose, and Los Angeles vs. Seattle, with most of those games being shown live on ESPN, ESPN2, FSC, and TeleFutura.
