The Austin Aztex 2010 schedule should be out this week; everyone’s just waiting for the USSF Division II to give its final OK. The season will run from April through September, with home games at House Park (if the Austin Independent School District gets the locker rooms finished). That’s soon, folks; there will be more news in the next couple of weeks about rosters, players, exhibition games, etc. Feb. 5 is the deadline to register for the Aztex’s 2010 Open Tryouts, coming up Feb. 13-14; go to www.austinaztex.com.

No surprises in the group stage of the African Nations Cup (well, not since Togo’s bullet-riddled exit, anyway). The six teams thus far into the final eight are the four World Cup qualifiers – Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, and Algeria – plus defending champ Egypt and host Angola. With the 2010 World Cup coming up in a few months in nearby South Africa, there’s been more international attention than usual on this year’s ANC – just as there are higher expectations, perhaps, of some of the African teams. So far, the action on the field in Angola has not disappointed.
