The UT Longhorns‘ season was still alive Wednesday night, as freshman Hannah Higgins scored with three minutes to go in the second overtime to knock off third-seeded Colorado, 1-0, in the first round of the Big 12 Championship tournament. Next up: Probably second-seeded Texas A&M and possible revenge for a 4-0 drubbing last Friday in College Station.

It looks like both St. Edward’s teams will be seeing postseason action as well. The Hilltopper women lost their second straight 1-0 game Friday at 15th-ranked Incarnate Word, despite dominating play for most of the game. That probably cost them the Heartland Conference title, but they should be a lock for an NCAA bid anyway. They end the regular season at St. Mary’s Saturday. The St. Edward’s men won a pair to move to 7-1 in conference – they end their season on the road this weekend, needing just a draw in two games to clinch their conference title and an NCAA bid. Pretty good turnaround, after being winless in their first eight games.
Non-United Soccer Leagues? The Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact made noises last week about leaving the USL-1, perhaps reviving talk of a breakaway league run by the team owners. Don’t bet on it; cooler heads will prevail, eh?
The fourth of six days of European Champions League group play was a good one for England; Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United all clinched spots in the next round, with a couple of games to spare. Porto, Bordeaux, Lyon, and Sevilla are into the final 16 as well; Liverpool stayed barely alive with a draw at Lyon. The next round of games will be in two weeks.
Next up on the international calendar: World Cup Qualifying concludes Nov. 14 & 18, with nine spots to be decided.
