The UT women seem to be peaking at just the right time: They beat Brigham Young University in the NCAA first round, 2-0, on two early goals from freshman striker Alisha Ortiz – her first multigoal game – and then ousted host Texas A&M in the second round, beating them for the second time in six days, 3-2. The Horns now must win twice more on the road to get back to College Station for the Final Four, Dec. 7 & 9. First up: at Florida State, this Friday, Nov. 23, at 6pm. The Houston Dynamo won their second straight MLS championship on Sunday, beating the New England Revo­lution, 2-1, on late goals by Joseph Ngwenya and Dwayne De Rosario.

The field is just about set for next summer’s Euro 2008 finals. Italy advanced Saturday, knocking out valiant Scotland with an injury-time winner in Glasgow; that result put France through as well. Just about all the heavyweights are in; even dismal England now controls its own destiny, thanks to even more dismal Russia’s loss to Israel, though they still need a result on Wednesday to scrape in. The quadrennial European Championship is second only to the World Cup as an international prize.

Euro Champions League is back in action Nov. 27-28; ESPN2 will show Sporting Lisbon at Manchester United, 1:45pm Tuesday, and Chelsea at surprising Rosenborg, 1:45pm Wednesday.
