UT’s Lady Longhorns opened their season Friday with a comfortable 3-0 exhibition win over UT-San Antonio, outshooting the Roadrunners by an astounding 32-1, behind goals from seniors Amy Burlingham and Carrie Schmit and an assist from freshman forward Emily Anderson (Westlake High). The Horns open their regular season this Friday, on the road at Auburn.

Defensive captain Stephanie Logterman will miss that game, and, she hopes, the next two as well; she’s in Russia, playing for the U.S. national team in the Under-20 World Championships. The Americans have won their first two games – 2-1 over Congo and 4-1 over Argentina, with Logterman playing every minute thus far – to advance to the quarterfinals this Sunday.

None of those games are being televised in the U.S., unfortunately, but you can watch the U.S. women in action in a friendly match against China this Sunday, Aug. 27, 11am on ESPN2.

The European Champions League qualifying rounds ended this Wednesday, with just one major upset: Ajax Amsterdam falling at home to Copenhagen. The group stage will kick off Oct. 19; see full results at “Soccer Watch Online.”
