It was a huge week for the UT Lady Longhorns, who evened their Big 12 record at 2-2 by thumping Baylor, 3-0, and beating 11th-ranked Texas A&M for only the second time ever, 2-1. Sophomore midfielder Caitlin Kennedy scored in each game and won national Team of the Week honors; freshman goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Big 12 Newcomer of the Week) seems to have cemented her starting role, so much so that coach Chris Petrucelli trotted out previous starter Dana Hall and third-stringer Melissa Adrouny as field players during the Baylor game. The Horns are home again this weekend, hosting Colorado at 7pm Friday, and Texas Tech at 1pm, Sunday.
The way the ball bounces in the international game: Last week, Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) and Frank Lampard (Chelsea) were “kicking lumps out of each other,” in Gerrard’s words, as the bitter English rivals faced off twice in both the English Premier League and the European Champions League. This week, the star midfielders are “the best of mates” (Gerrard again) national teammates, to be exact, as the club season takes a break, and England tries to earn a spot in next summer’s World Cup with final qualifying games against Austria (10am, Saturday) and Poland (1:45pm, Wednesday). Those games are pay-per-view only (try Fadó Irish Pub or Ringers Sports Lounge), but a few others are on cable: notably the U.S. at Costa Rica (9pm, Saturday), and vs. Panama (7pm, Wednesday), both on ESPN2.
