The UT Women started the season in fine form last weekend, with a pair of shutout wins over quality opponents: 1-0 over SMU, and 2-0 over Auburn. The young defense looks very good so far. This week the Horns are on the road, at Michigan and Michigan State.
It’s a big week of World Cup qualifying, with key games all around the globe. One of the biggest: The U.S. hosts Mexico in Columbus, Ohio, 6:30pm Saturday, Sept. 3, live on ESPN Classic (rebroadcast at 1:30am on ESPN2). Both teams have just about clinched advancement already, but there’s more at stake here. A win could propel the Americans – already No. 6 in the world – past Mexico in the rankings and possibly into position for a top seed in next summer’s World Cup. Wednesday, Sept. 7, is another WCQ day; the U.S. is at Guatemala that night (9pm on ESPN2).
Lots of other WCQ games on tap both days, but unfortunately, you can only see them on pay-per-view or closed circuit. Fortunately, though, there’s a new option in town for watching those games (and others) – Ringers Sports Lounge, 415 Colorado, recently started showing English Premier League and WCQ games and will have a full schedule both days, starting with England-Wales at 9am Saturday. $20 cover (contractually required), but that includes a free breakfast buffet.
