Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry played soccer at Yale

Surprising that this didn’t become a campaign issue in the primary, but Dem front-runner John Kerry was a notorious right-winger during his high school days in New Hampshire, and at Yale. In fact, the 1966 grad scored three goals from that position in his final game against archrival Harvard.

Elsewhere: Brazil won’t be at this summer’s Olympics; they were knocked out Sunday in a shock 1-0 loss to Paraguay… The MLS is looking at San Antonio for a possible expansion franchise in 2005-6; league officials came to town last week to meet with Mayor Ed Garza and a group of local investors… Landon Donovan may be the newest Yank in England’s Premier League, if he and Portsmouth can clear up FIFA’s contract objections… Leonidas Da Silva, the inventor of the bicycle kick, died Saturday of Alzheimer’s. Da Silva, 90, had been suffering from the disease for 30 years… An MLS/WUSA merger could also be in the works, as league reps consider bringing back women’s pro soccer with an arrangement along the lines of the NBA/WNBA model… The MLS’s Chicago Fire could have a new stadium soon, if the suburban Village of Bridgeview agrees to pony up $40 million-$70 million for the privilege.
