As they say on the USA Curling website, Curling Rocks. Other than our stunning defeat of Canada in mens hockey, the event Ive heard most discussed and the one Ive watched the most during these Winter Games is curling. A sport America sucks at, by the way.
And for some reason (maybe because Im a guy), I find womens curling more compelling than mens testosterone-fueled high fives and chest-bumping are out of place in this endeavor. Im more interested in how well USA womens curler Debbie McCormick has performed than Bode Miller or soul-patch sprouter Apolo Ohno. If, like me, youve become oddly fascinated with curling but thought youd never have the chance to slide a stone into the house, the Lone Star Curling Club is here to make your curling dreams a reality. The club is offering free introductory curling classes the next two weekends. Players of all experience levels are welcome, and warm clothing and rubber-soled shoes are required. All other equipment is provided. Sun., Feb. 28, and Sun., March 7, 9:30am-11:45am. Chaparral Ice, 2525 W. Anderson. Free (donations are welcome).
