Austin-area Texans fans rejoice. KEYE has decided to air the Texans game against Jacksonville instead of the Tennessee-Tampa Bay matchup. Even though the Titans/Falcons game received a higher rating than the Texans/Dolphins game last Sunday, KEYE has decided to show Texans fans some love by choosing them for this week’s broadcast. Texans fans need to tune out any outside distractions (like kids, wives, husbands, chores, church, etc.) and tune into KEYE Sunday at noon to help cheer our home-state team on to victory. And not to toot my own horn, but I’m most certain that after reading my previous blog on the matter, KEYE realized there was no other option but to comply with the wishes of The Austin Chronicle‘s mighty sports blog, the Score.
The Texans also made national news this week for two reasons, one good, one not so great. Kris Brown became the third NFL kicker ever to kick three 50-plus field goals in one game (54, 54, and 57), with the 57-yard kick clinching the victory with mere seconds remaining. These are also the longest field goals in Texans’ history and the 57-yarder is the longest of Brown’s career.
The other big story on sports-talk radio is that of Travis Johnson and Trent Green. On a broken play, Dolphins quarterback Green attempted to block Texans defensive lineman Johnson with his below-the-knee effort taking Johnson down awkwardly and resulting in a serious concussion for Green. Johnson was less than pleased with Green’s low blow and proceeded to taunt the unconscious Green immediately following the play. And to make matters worse, Johnson went off on an expletive-laced tirade following the game directed toward Green. Johnson received a 15-yard penalty for his taunting but the NFL decided today that he would not be fined or receive further punishment. My two cents: The block was dangerously low and could have seriously injured Johnson, but there is no way that Green was deliberately attempting to harm Johnson. It’s just a case of a quarterback trying to block a huge lineman, and doing an extremely poor job of it.
