The Austin Aztex U-23s started a new win streak on the weekend, running their record to 6-1-1 with a pair of shutout wins, leading up to tonight’s U.S. Open Cup showdown against the First Division Atlanta Silverbacks – the first time a full professional team has played in Austin since … well, I don’t know when that’s happened before. Anyone?

The Aztex handled a pretty good El Paso Patriots team Friday night at home, winning 2-0, before going up to Dallas Sunday night and trouncing the DFW Tornados, 4-0, despite resting a number of regulars. Andres Cuero, an 18-year-old Westlake High product, got three of those goals, the Aztex’s first-ever hat trick, while Willy Guadarrama got the final tally – good to see him back from what looked to be a pretty bad wrist injury a couple of weeks ago.

Now, for their third game in five days, the Aztex are back home for the Open Cup game Tuesday night, June 10, 7:30pm at Round Rock High Dragon Stadium, 300 North Lake Creek Drive (just west of I-35 and RR 620). This is a knockout game, so it will go to overtime and a penalty-kick shootout if needed. The winner advances to the next round June 24.
