Varela is a well-known El Paso filmmaker who is a pioneer of the personal style of film expression, as well as an advocate of the Super-8 format. Inspired to pick up a camera by the examples of John Lennon and Stan Brakhage, Varela has been making movies since the early Seventies. Since then he has shot more than 100 films with running times ranging from just a few minutes to over 100. He is currently working on three new video installations. This program will feature samples of his Super-8 work and video shorts; Varela will be present for a Q&A following the screening. Additionally, on Sunday (5/26), at noon at the Hideout, Varela will host a workshop titled “Developing a Personal Vision in the Moving Image.” Admission to the workshop is $10 or $5 for Cinemaker and AFS members.
