Following the successful opening-week run of Arlo & Julie in its debut last Friday, May 8, the Violet Crown Cinema has carried over Steve Mims’ Austin-made film for another week. To thank the fans, Mims & Co. are providing patrons with exclusive collectors’ items from the film.
In a preview of the film, “Puzzling Over Love,” Marc Savlov described Arlo & Julie as “a sweetly comic gem of a movie that works with a tender touch on the perpetual puzzle of late-twentysomething love, obsession, and … Ulysses S. Grant.” A jigsaw puzzle becomes an essential ingredient of the plot.
Now filmgoers have the chance to bring home a piece of the puzzle for themselves. The filmmakers are handing out puzzle pieces with numbered autographed collectors’ cards (pictured here), as long as supplies last. Each card is a certificate of authenticity that verifies that the puzzle piece was, indeed, used in the making of the film, and is signed by the film’s stars, Alex Dobrenko and Ashley Spillers.
Arlo & Julie marks the return of longtime Austin filmmaker, UT lecturer, and Austin FilmWorks founder and director Steve Mims to the ranks of narrative filmmaking after co-directing the SXSW 2011 award-winner Incendiary: The Willingham Case. In her review of Arlo & Julie, Kimberley Jones notes that “Austin looks terrific” in the locally made film. “This is a crisp, vibrantly colored picture of our current metropolis.” Act soon to snag one of these official artifacts.
