Alan Govenar’s “Little Willie Eason and His Talking Gospel Guitar”

South by Southwest Music may be all about what’s next, but it doesn’t hurt to take a look back at what’s been. That’s exactly what will happen at March 14’s screening of Texas Music Extravaganza: The San Antonio Sound, a performance documentary exploring the impact of Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, and Flaco Jimenez. Post-film performers include the Raul Malo Band with Augie Meyers, the Trishas & Friends, and Adam Aguilar.

Alan Govenar knows a thing or two about Texas music – see his 2008 book, Texas Blues: The Rise of a Contemporary Sound – but the terrifically prolific author, folklorist, and filmmaker’s interests extend also to black rodeo culture, steel guitar giant Little Willie Eason, the Arabic instrument the oud, and a circus sword swallower, to name a few. SXSW Film will honor Govenar’s 30-year career in a two-part retrospective of his short films.

Texas Music Extravaganza screens at Antone’s at 8pm on Sunday, March 14. Doors open at 7pm. The event is open to the public, with priority entry given to SXSW badgeholders.
