Plane crash romances don’t always translate into cinematic magic (see Random Hearts), but writer/director Don Roos hopes to put a bit of, er, bounce back into the genre with this film, which Miramax bumped from a summer release to position it in the cozy autumn Oscar race. Gwyneth Paltrow stars as a widow who falls for the man (Ben Affleck) who gave up his seat on a fatal flight to her husband. Paltrow and Affleck are certainly no strangers to romance: Early buzz indicates their real-life relationship makes a smooth transition into a film that builds on the twosome’s combustible chemistry. After firing blanks at Cannes with early Oscar hopefuls The Golden Bowl and The Yards, look for Miramax to roll out the red carpet for a film which Affleck cites as his best work yet. And although Roos might seem a strange choice for director (his last film was the scathing black comedy The Opposite of Sex), remember that as a writer, Roos sent tear ducts into overdrive with 1995’s Boys on the Side.
