On the last Monday in May, we here in the States observe a holiday originally intended to remember the fallen Armed Forces who lost their lives in the Civil War. Almost 150 years later, we’ve reduced it to beachside barbecue, naps, and mattress sales.
Indeed, as we approach Memorial Day weekend, there’s really no better time to take a good hard look at the bizarre world of American holidays. And a dozen filmmakers – including University of Texas grad Todd Berger – have done just that.
But of course, filmmakers being the types they are, they took a sort of unique approach to their assignment, and what became of their work is Holiday Road, which screens tonight – in partnership with Toy Joy, so you know you’re in for a comedic goldmine – at the Violet Crown Cinema.
As of this writing, half a dozen seats remain (a veritable wealth, in VCC theatres), so do check out the trailer below and then hustle on Downtown to settle in for the full-length, “very absurd and dark” anthology.
