Audiences may thrill to this fraternity house anti-caper as blood spews, girls are publicly humiliated, and hip-hop pounds to freshman rush in director Canon’s feature debut. Young male egos are put to the test as a fraternity pledge hoax goes mortally wrong, setting off a night of leveraged morality among frenemies as the desperate scream and the stakes rise. Canon’s pacing aims for the moment-to-moment tension of overnight-catharsis films such as American Graffiti and After Hours; however, the camaraderie that jollied us through the night in those films is absent here, as we descend with Sigma Zeta Chi to the soundproof torture basement for the protagonist’s moment of truth. The intensity of antagonist Frank, as played by Foster, evokes a young John C. McGinley in Platoon. Vertigo-inducing handheld sequences add to the ride.
