Fired!

D: Chris Bradley & Kyle Labrache

It sucks to be fired. The shame, embarrassment, and failure cloud every day. But as time passes, humor heals. Annabelle Gurwitch was fired by cultural icon Woody Allen, Gurwitch’s first slap in the face. While most of us wish we could be so lucky, Gurwitch felt this unknown misery and took off on an expedition. The hilarious laundry list of past jobs from friends Illeana Douglas, Tim Allen, and Andy Dick comfort, while stories from Fred Willard (fired because of a case of mistaken identity) and Jeff Garlin (fired because of a certain need to wear a hanger on his head) put everything in perspective. A trip to Lansing, Mich., brings Gurwitch back to Earth, and she finally realizes she’s not alone. If only we could all be fired by Allen, or by Bob Odenkirk and his patented “this is what you want” tactics, for that matter.
