Sorry, that was cruel. It’s free, and there’s a park, but it’s not an insider’s guide to the best spot to plop your car for a few hours Downtown; it’s Movies in the Park season, starting tonight!
The Austin Parks Foundation and the Alamo Drafthouse have teamed up once again to light up Republic Square Park with the flickering silver screen. Austinites can trek down to the park (4th & Guadalupe) by bike or bus (or, God help you, car, but we’re still not giving any parking tips) on select Thursday evenings for the next six months to enjoy blockbuster favorites from the “heroes and heroines” theme. Check out the full slate, including links to our reviews, where available:
May 16: The Fifth Element (8:30pm, sponsored by Downtown Austin Alliance)
June 6: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (8:30pm)
July 11: A League of Their Own (8:30pm)
Sept. 12: Rocky (7:30pm, sponsored by Austin Resource Recovery)
Oct. 24: Ghostbusters (7:30pm, sponsored by Wheatsville Co-op)
Nov. 7: Hunger Games (7:30pm)
There’s more information available at the Austin Parks website, including allowed and prohibited items (yes dogs, no booze, if you’re wondering), transportation info, and more.
With something to look forward to every month ’til November, Austin Parks and the Drafthouse are really doing their park to make that summer feeling last long into fall (when it’ll still feel like summer anyway). That’s our kind of hero.
