The Art School at the Austin Museum of Art is again offering a film appreciation class this summer called Cinema Eye. It will use excerpts from classic and contemporary films from Gone With the Wind to GoodFellas to introduce students to the basic elements of film and visual narrative techniques. It will be taught by Alison Macor, who writes on film for The Austin American-Statesman (and formerly the Chronicle), and who is a Ph.D. candidate in the RTF Dept. at UT and has also taught at ACC. As the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (aGLIFF) has grown over the past 11 years into a bigger and more community-wide event, the hours put in by volunteer workers grows ever more intrinsic to the success of the event. This year the festival is scheduled for August 27 – September 9, and aGLIFF is looking for volunteers with varied interests and talents to contribute to the effort both prior to the event and during it. All volunteers must attend an orientation and training session during the last week of July. Application forms must be submitted by Thursday, July 1. The Austin Cinemaker Co-op is at it again. They’ve announced their next project: Score Wars: The Phantom Flicker. Each interested filmmaker must first create an original soundtrack on cassette or CD by July 7. All works will be then tossed into a box, and on July 9 the participating filmmakers will return to fish out a random score from the grab bag o’ soundtracks, go home, and make a Super-8 film based on that soundtrack by August 4. Speaking of “four,” that’s a relevant number: Only four splices and soundtrack cuts are allowed, and the films/tapes can be a maximum of four minutes in length. The Austin Heart of Film Festival is scheduled for October 7-14. Held in conjunction with the four-day-long Heart of Film Screenwriters Conference, the eight-day-long festival of screenings is accepting entries for the feature, short feature, and student short film categories. Entries must be postmarked by August 7 and applicants must be one of the credited writers. Films must have been completed by June 1, 1998. The fee is $40. The final deadline for submission of scripts to the Slamdance Screenplay Competition is Friday, July 23. Slamdance is the upstart film festival in Park City, Utah, that runs concurrent with the Sundance Film Festival. Many of last year’s finalists have received studio options on their work and other high-profile attention.
