Ceci N’est Pas Une Fête Dept.: The seventh annual Cinematexas International Short Film Festival, which runs through Sunday, Sept. 22, is mere hours away from kick-off as we write this. Tickets, passes, and nifty laminates are still available via www.cinematexas.org — but for those of you who can’t make the screenings themselves, there are always a handful of parties and receptions (now with filmmakers included!) to check out, including two today, Thursday, Sept. 19. First there’s the UT Filmmaker Reception, from 5 to 7pm at the Clay Pit (1601 Guadalupe), and then the Video Art Backyard BBQ at Yard Dog (1510 S. Congress), 8:30pm. On Friday, Sept. 20, Terra Cognita is hosting a reception for Portraits of Robots author Tom Zummer at Studio 107 (906 E. 5th), 5-7pm, and then on Saturday, Sept. 21, Terra Cognita hosts a reception for Leslie Thornton, Forcefield, and Berliner-Alexanderplatz Group at Idea at the Bread Factory (704 Tillery) 4:30-7pm. Finally, on Sunday, Sept. 22, Club DeVille (904 Red River) hosts the Cinematexas Awards Ceremony at 8:30pm ’til close (which should complicate your Wire vs. Interpol show-hopping considerably). Don’t say we never floated you a party list… Cinemaker Co-op, Austin’s home for small-gauge filmmaking, is inextricably linked to Cinematexas this year, as always, and to that end they’ve also got a brace of events to hit up this week: Tonight, Thursday, Sept. 19, 7pm, at the Scottish Rite Theatre (207 W. 18th), it’s the Cinemaker International Screening 2002 ($6 general public/$3 Cinemaker & AFS members); then at 10pm at Gallery Lombardi (910 W. 3rd St.) it’s their Super 8 Bash with drinks, food, and lots of grain. On Friday, Sept. 20, 7pm, also at Gallery Lombardi, Cinemaker hosts a screening salon with Jennet Thomas and Paul Tarrago of London’s famed Exploding Cinema ($6 general public/$3 Cinemaker & AFS members). Finally, Saturday, Sept. 21, 11am, at Gallery Lombardi, Cinemaker is sponsoring a Super 8 Special Effects Workshop with the aforementioned Exploding cineastes.
