Score Wars: The Phantom Flicker is the Cinemaker Co-op’s latest conceptual film festival. A “sound-before-image project,” it consists of more than 30 short Super-8 films. In order to participate, filmmakers were challenged to create an original soundtrack – narratives, interviews, nature sounds, local music, droning heavy-metal guitar noise, anything – and toss it into a box. Once all the soundtracks were submitted, each filmmaker returned to pick up one of the other filmmakers’ soundtracks at random. It was then their task to create a one-reel Super 8 film using that soundtrack. No one was allowed to use their own audio; all films feature original soundtracks.
