What do you get when you mix an Austin classic, 23 of the freshest homegrown talent, and a very good cause indeed? Slacker 2011.

In conjunction with Slacker‘s 20th anniversary year – which, you may remember, the Chron chronicled a few months back (“Slack to the Future”) – the Austin Film Society and the Alamo Drafthouse are teaming up to spearhead a redo of Richard Linklater’s seminal film. A scene by scene homage will be shot by a gaggle of great local working filmmakers. In addition to teams repped by the AFS Film Club, the Alamo Drafthouse, and Reel Women, individual filmmakers include Miguel Alvarez, Bradley Beesley, John Bryant, Bob Byington, Mike Dolan, Sam Wainwright Douglas, Jay Duplass, Chris Eska, Paul Gordon, Amy Grappell, Duane Graves, Berndt Mader, Geoff Marslett, Spencer Parsons, PJ Raval, Bob Ray, Elisabeth Sikes, Karen Skloss, Ben Steinbauer, and the Zellner Bros.

But what of the good cause we spoke of? To support the AFS’ essential Texas Filmmakers Production Fund, parts in the Slacker redux will be auctioned off, from background extra to executive producer credit. The film will debut on Aug. 21, with Linklater and all the participating filmmakers, who represent the next wave in a local film landscape Linklater helped birth, will be in attendance for a Q&A.
