In last week’s profile of the Alamo Drafthouse’s Mondo, we hinted the local poster boutique had some big news coming down the pipeline. Well, it finally arrived, and it involves a little something called the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Specifically, Mondo is partnering with the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library, a research facility that houses more than 10 million photographs, 80,000 screenplays, and 35,000 movie posters.
That poster collection is about to get bigger. In a press release today, the Academy announced that the Library would begin archiving Mondo’s limited-edition original film posters, starting with Drew Struzan‘s newly inked Frankenstein poster (see picture).
Not only will the Mondo posters be in good company the Margaret Herrick Library holds all of the legendary Saul Bass‘ poster work the accommodations ain’t too shabby, either: They’ll be stored in climate-controlled vaults, and will live on the web, too, in the Library’s online catalog. Until then, you can browse through ten years of Mondo movie posters, commissioned from the likes of Olly Moss, Shepard Fairey, and Tyler Stout, at Mondo’s archive here.
