Diverting from the CD-ROM trail for a moment, the audio-book version of The
Texas Rangers
(Western Books on Tape, $17.99) by Walter Prescott Webb, has
a place in this multimedia shoot-out. This nifty two-cassette package was
abridged by Turk Pipkin and read by Steve Fromholz. Webb made poetry of Texas
history with this epic, and Fromholz does a fine reading of it. Pipkin’s choice
of material to be included here avoids some of the passages that don’t seem
politically correct today, but one thing is clear: Even when condensed and
cleaned up, Texas history delivered by one of the giants who came along not
long after the blood had dried and the dust had settled is strong stuff. I like
this tape. The cover photo of retired Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson kind of says
it all.
