This new documentary by Saul Landau, the prolific and much -honored director of The Sixth Sun: Mayan Uprising in Chiapas, investigates the personal, economic, social, and environmental effects of working in the maquilas. Pushed off their land in Southern Mexico and eking out livelihoods in the border-town maquilas, Mexican workers have been devastated by the impact of the maquila industry. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with local activists with expertise in the subject, including Elvia Arriola and Petra Mata of the San Antonio-based group Fuerza Unida. The screening is co-sponsored by La Peña, the Esperanza Center, Fuerza Unida, the Institute of Policy Studies, and The Texas Observer.
