Opportunities to see Jean-Pierre Melville films don’t come around too often, and when they do they shouldn’t be tossed off lightly — especially when he co-scripted this one with Jean Cocteau. It’s a perverse and hermetic tale about a strongly attached brother and sister, who live together in their littered room, hardly ever venturing out. Talk about inbreeding! Cocteau delivers the film’s voiceover commentary.
