Anyone who has seen Julie Dashs magnificent and thoroughly unique feature film Daughters of the Dust doesnt need me to tell them about the filmmakers unique sensibilities and her passion for depicting the lives of black women on film. “African Nun” is an adaptation of an Alice Walker story, and it served as Dashs thesis film. “Four Women” is a film interpretation of the famous Nina Simone song. “Illusions” is an imaginative piece set during WWII in which a black woman studio executive who passes for white comes to grips with a society that perpetuates false images.
