James Franco as Allen Ginsburg in Howl

The Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival comes out with their titles of the Opening Night, Centerpiece, and Closing Night films, as well other announcements for the event that begins on September 7 and continues through Sept. 12.

New to this year’s festival is a juried competition for narrative and documentary features and shorts. The winning filmmakers will receive cash prizes and an invitation to sit on next year’s jury. Opening the festival on Tuesday, Sept. 7 is The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, a documentary about the New Zealand twins and lesbians, who are also comediennes, singers, and social-justice fighters. The Closing Night film is Bear City, featuring an often maligned and hidden group. The Centerpiece film is Howl, featuring James Franco as Allen Ginsburg in the new biopic.
