In this concluding (and entirely self-sufficient) chapter of Hou’s trilogy about the history of Taiwan in the 20th century, the director uses history and art to show their relationship to the individual. The multilayered story centers on an actress whose reality shifts between the past reflections taken from her purloined diary and her future imaginings about the project she’s about to shoot. In a review, Chicago Reader critic Jonathan Rosenbaum has declared that “if you care about the future of world cinema you can’t afford to miss it.”
