Safety Not Guaranteed, the oddball little movie about love and time travel which opened in Austin this past Friday, got us thinking about other recent indie films about time travel. Two of our favorites from the past decade are Primer and Timecrimes.
Like Safety Not Guaranteed, Primer premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, but in 2004 rather than 2012. It received that year’s Grand Jury Prize. Filmed in Dallas by Shane Carruth, Primer has a bare-bones budget that makes Safety‘s look positively plush. Timecrimes by Spaniard Nacho Vigalondo premiered at the Alamo’s Fanatastic Fest in 2007, where the filmmaker received the festival’s Next Wave Award and solidified his place in the fest’s pantheon of favorite guests. Vigalondo’s newest film Extraterrestrial is scheduled to open at the Drafthouse on July 13.
