Top of the world, Ma. Surely, if ever there were a location made to be filmed by an IMAX camera it’s this: Mt. Everest, the tallest peak in the world. Adding to the film’s drama is its timing – the filmmakers arrived at the site just as the fateful 1996 expedition written about in Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air occurred, and they were able to record some of the rescue during which eight climbers lost their lives. The climb posed many technical problems with equipment and film stock due to the height and temperature, but the images brought back make this 1998 film soar. The script is co-written by travel writer Tim Cahill and uses music by George Harrison.
