Other Notable Films
Santitos
Santitos is the 1999 winner of The Latin American Award from the Sundance Film Festival and Best Picture Award from the 1999 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. Alejandro Springall’s film has been described as a “magical, humorous, and passion-filled odyssey about a beautiful widow’s search for her missing child, a mission that takes her from her humble Mexican village to the brothels of Tijuana, guided the entire time by her beloved saints.”
Baja, California: El Limite del Tiempo
Filmmaker Carlos Bolado is known for his editing work on Like Water for Chocolate. Baja, California won eight 1999 Ariel Awards (Mexico’s equivalent to the Oscar) including awards for Best Picture, Actor, and Editor.
Ballad of a Soldier
An adaptation of Luis Valdez’s 1971 play, “Soldado Razo,” by Valdez’s producer-director sons, Anahuac and Kinan Valdez. The visually stunning film has the distinction of featuring a bad-ass performance by Maria Candelaria as a real woman, instead of the stereotypical mother-saint-whore figure so prevalent in other Chicano films.
