Unlike 1984, which passed without serious Orwellian calamity, 2001 the year ended up being far more horrific and unsettling than Kubrick’s chilly namesake masterpiece. The real world has become unreal, and suddenly HAL and Dave’s love-hate relationship seems almost quaint. Still, Kubrick’s ability to hold us in thrall remains, and the film stands as a timeless, elegiac glimpse into a mysterious future now overtaken by the dark sweep of the present. The Paramount Theatre will screen a newly restored 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey Jan. 16-22, as part of their Winter Movie Classics series, which starts Jan 9.
