The artist in front of his new series of sign paintings -
Outside the studio, which is situated on a downward slope behind the main house. Horizonal windows on this wall illuminate the inside space. -
Inside two large walls are hung with DeFrese’s work, lit by track lighting and the large narrow corner windows. -
A neon surfboard is almost camouflaged among the sign paintings. -
Neon bands of patterning connect previous and current work, and this particular painting is collaged with what appears to be a found still life. -
Glue, paint, old work, a boom box, a spindle of CDs -
Tables are littered with tools and marks that index DeFrese’s process. -
One can never have enough spray paint. -
One of DeFrese’s works in progress looks completely abstract until, on closer inspection, a strip of high school yearbook photos become visible on the painted ground. -
Even the trash can is palette coordinated.
