Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, and Keith Richards at Houston’s NRG Stadium on July 27, 2019 Staff photographer David Brendan Hall explains the story behind his favorite shot of the year: “Making photos of the Rolling Stones is a golden goose for music photographers, and with all members in their 70s when they announced their No Filter Tour, the sense of urgency to check off that No. 1 bucket list band was palpable. With the assignment secured came a plot twist: Jagger was ordered to undergo heart surgery, forcing postponement of the original April date until July … I couldn’t have been alone in worrying that the gig might not even happen. For me, this image best encapsulates the surreal feeling of all the elements finally coming together: two songs with my lens trained on one of the greatest rock bands of all time, seemingly immortal in their unerring onstage energy, just a few feet away – a landmark career moment I’ll never take for granted.” -
