The Austin Zoo spares the lives of animals that have been abused, abandoned, or neglected.
Texas Parks and Wildlife and other governmental entities rescue abused animals and the Austin Zoo takes them in. These animals come from all across the nation and each one comes with a distinct story. From laboratory research animals that have been retired to animal cruelty cases, the local zoo offers them a place to call home.
“Our goal is to rescue animals that have no other place to go and provide them [with] a forever home,” director Patti Clark said.
The zoo has more than 300 animals and over 115 species. To help the animals stay warm this winter, the nonprofit is requesting items such as small electric heaters, heat lamp bulbs, linens, blankets, or pillow cases. Old or used items such as gardening tools, old hay for bedding, and certain meat and vegetable products are also useful. Additionally, animal sponsorships allow individuals, schools, local churches, and organizations to have a special impact on a specific animal. For individuals who want to donate their time, the zoo has an extensive volunteer program that allows volunteers to work daily shifts.
“It’s important to support the Austin Zoo because you are supporting our rescue efforts and providing these animals who would likely have no other place to go a safe haven,” Clark said.
