Overall, the University of Texas System and UT-Austin provide at least 143 private club memberships for their employees. Actually, the exact number is unclear, particularly as regards the UT Athletic Department. UT gave the Chronicle one set of figures in response to a request under the Texas Open Records Act, but recently gave a different (higher) set of figures to reporters from the Austin American-Statesman. We chose to use the data UT provided us, which was a list last updated in March of 1997, which represents UT-Austin personnel who were provided with private club memberships between September 1996 and March 1997. Titles were provided by officials in the office of the vice president for business affairs.
