Poll Workers Needed
County Clerk to Host Elections Open House

Austin-Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir announced that her office will host an Open House for the purpose of recruiting poll workers for the upcoming November 6, 2007, election.

The Elections Open House will take place Wednesday, October 3, from 11:30 am – 2:00 pm at the Elections Division offices at 5501 Airport Boulevard.

“As we move toward the November election, and edge closer to the presidential election next year, we are working to strengthen and revitalize our pool of election workers,” DeBeauvoir said.

As part of the overall recruiting efforts, the office also is focused on recruiting bilingual Spanish speakers to ensure full compliance with Texas Law and Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act. Earlier this year, DeBeauvoir established an advisory committee to assist in recruiting bilingual workers.

“We are looking for voters who are interested in the elections process and are computer savvy,” said DeBeauvoir. “At the same time, one of my chief goals is to meet our legal commitment to ensure that bilingual speakers are available at the polls,” DeBeauvoir said.

In order to serve as an election worker, a person must be a registered voter of Travis County, be able to work 14 hours on Election Day, and commit to operate the polling place in a nonpartisan manner. Paid positions are available, and training is provided.

“Election work is serious business, but it’s also a lot of fun,” DeBeauvoir said. “Workers return year after year and enjoy the friendships they develop.”
